Overview

What is this activity?

This is a form of surfing that has seen a recent resurgence, practiced at one time by the beach boys of Waikiki. Popular with watermen as an alternative way to ride the surf and as a great means of staying in shape. Our course includes the following:

  • You will be learning as part of a group
  • Includes an introduction to water safety and beach awareness
  • Learn the basics of standing on the board
  • Learn how to propel yourself using a paddle
  • Great for all abilities
  • All equipment included
  • Fantastic alternative to surf lessons in calm conditions

Give this sport a go and get out there. It's either a very mellow alternative to normal surfing on a calm day or a somewhat insane sport as you paddle out to sea to catch large offshore swells trying to control a 12ft board with a little balance and a long paddle!

Location

For all you doubters out there, yes the South Coast does have surf and Boscombe is a well known spot here for surfing. It's a great place to learn for beginners as the waves are pretty friendly and they break onto a sandy beach meaning that there are no unpleasant encounters with rocks.

For those who are more experienced, Boscombe Pier offers a great left or right depending on which side you're on. 2009 also saw the completion of the first artificial surf reef in Europe. This break offers a fast left and a slower right. However, you do have to be a more experienced surfer to get out there as it's a little way off shore.

What makes Boscombe ideal for learning and developing your surfing is not just the sandy beaches and the variety of breaks, it's the great location in relation to major cities such as London and the easy access to the beach and other amenities. This means that you can have a great surf then head out to enjoy the delights of clubbing in Bournemouth or a quiet country pub in the New Forest - you choose.
