RYA Intermediate powerboat course

Undertaking this intermediate powerboat course will further your appreciation and understanding of the hazards present at sea, and the safety procedures and handling skills required to mitigate them. Our powerboat courses are provided by one of the UK's leading powerboat training schools. All of their instructors are fully qualified and the courses are full RYA qualifications.

The Course

The Intermediate Powerboat course from the RYA follows on from the Powerboat Level 2 course and can only be taught by advanced centres. It's a 2 day course and covers:

Theory subjects such as: navigation; bearings; bearing & distance; charts & symbols; tides; use of almanacs; use of marina locks; lat & long; principals of GPS; sources of forecast information & interpretation of them; use of charts; use of plotting instruments; buoyage; IRPCS; waypoint navigation; emergency situations.

Practical subjects including: boat preparation including kit, crew preparation, stowage; boat handling including effect of waves, rougher conditions, awareness of wind & tide; pilotage, passage making including application of subjects covered in theory section; man overboard recovery techniques.

To really make the most of this course we usually use large coded RIBs allowing us (weather conditions allowing) to operate beyond our usual 3 mile operating area (measured from the entrance to Poole Harbour) creating a more special and valuable course for our clients.

Our RIB Harrier is licensed for Category 3 operation (up to 20 miles from a safe haven) and as such are very well equipped to the extent where they carry life rafts in addition to the usual plethora of safety gear.

The Instructors will be Advanced Powerboat Instructors who know the area well and how to plan and execute such passages safely.

When does it run/availability

• Courses are available 7 days a week, allow at least  1 weeks booking notice
• Available all year round, seven days a week. (Weather permitting)
• 2 Day Experience
• Flexible times from morning to evenings available

What you need to bring along

• Warm clothing and sensible shoes is always recommended.  Also don't forget to bring a bottle of water and some sunscreen just in case!
